Rotator cuff impingement and tendonitis

The rotator cuff is not one muscle, but 4 that actually help to move the shoulder in a throwing type motion, lifting over the shoulder and in a rotational fashion. Impingement and tendonitis are two different types of injuries that affect two different types of people. Rotator cuff impingement patients are typically younger and involved in baseball, swimming and other throwing sports. These individuals have used these muscles so much that the shoulder becomes very loose in the socket. Rotator cuff tendonitis or bursitis, patients are typically older. The pain involved with these individuals is described as milder compared to rotator cuff impingement, but with further irritation, such as improper heavy lifting, they can undergo a rotator cuff tear.

A strong regiment of physician directed physical therapy is usually the treatment. In extreme situations, surgery might be needed. Also, medication might be prescribed for the pain, but because the rotator cuff is a series of muscles, the most effective treatment is rehabilitative exercises.
