Plantar FasciitisPlantar Fasciitis is an inflammatory condition where pain is felt on the heel of the foot. Stress on the foot is the cause, typically by high levels of activity on hard surfaces, such as running or jumping. Obesity is another cause of this condition. A common side effect is the development of a heel spur, which is also very painful. Most often, the pain is felt on the first steps of the day, getting out of bed. In most cases proper stretching technique will help, if not completely alleviate the problem. Athletes with this condition will learn how to tape the foot before exercise and maybe certain devices, such as inserts or special footwear will be needed. In rare cases, injections of corticosteroids may be required to lessen pain. Tests such as ultrasounds, or X-rays may be needed, and medication to decrease pain. In most cases physician directed rehabilitation will solve the problem.
