Herniated DiscA “slipped” or herniated disc is a very common and painful injury. It can be caused by general traumatic injury, or just routine wear and tear on the body. In this condition, the hard, outer ring of the disc tears, allowing the soft, inner portion to spill out. The pain that patients feel can be isolated to the injured disc, or it can radiate elsewhere. Typically, patients with a herniated cervical disc complain of arm pain. The reason the pain radiates is because the herniated material affects the nerve that runs to other parts of the body. Upon medical examination, the physician will do tests to ensure a herniated disc is the problem. These tests include, but are not limited to: an X-ray, MRI, or a CAT scan. Most herniated discs heal themselves and do not require surgery. The healing process takes at least six weeks, so supportive care is generally recommended. Physical therapy, chiropractic work, massage therapy and sometimes pain medication that is physician directed are all common treatments.
