Compression Fracture

Compression fractures of the vertebrae typically occur during severe trauma such as car wrecks or a fall from tall heights, or happen to people with compromised bone density, such as people with osteoporosis or cancer. Aside from a general soreness in the area, complications arise when the fracture causes the bone to push on the spinal cord. These complications can include numbness, tingling or loss of bladder/ bowel control.

CT scans, MRI and X-rays can show the physician if the patient has suffered a compression fracture. In rare cases, surgery is needed to ensure that the bone does not press against the spinal cord. In general, physician directed rehabilitation through physical exercise which includes strength training and stretching along with medication for the pain is the most likely treatment.
