Cervical WhiplashCervical Whiplash is most commonly known as “whiplash syndrome” of the neck. “Whiplash syndrome” is a very common outcome of a rear-end auto collision. Although car accidents are the most common form of whiplash, many other activities can cause it such as skiing or roller coasters. In fact, any activity in which the neck is forced into a rapid, jerking movement can cause whiplash. The pain stems from the stretch of dorsal root ganglia and compression of the cervical facet joints. Although symptoms can occur directly after the event, typically patients won't show symptoms until days later. This type of muscle tearing cannot be seen by an X-ray, so the physician might recommend an MRI in extreme cases. Treatment can include pain medication, muscle relaxants and physical therapy.
